‘Heartbeat’ bill fails during final hours of state legislative session

A House-passed bill that would have banned abortions as soon as a fetal heartbeat is detected failed to pass its final hurdle in the Alabama Legislature. On the last day of the Legislature’s 2014 session April 3, the Senate decided not to take up the fetal heartbeat bill — House Bill 490 — with Senate leaders saying they wanted to wait until court cases on similar laws in other states were decided, according to an Associated Press report.  A fetal heartbeat can be detected as early as six to seven weeks into a pregnancy, and the bill would have both required doctors to check for a fetal heartbeat and would have banned an abortion if a fetal heartbeat was detected.
