Storms made themselves known at the start of the new year, causing significant damage in Houston County on Jan. 2.
And Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) volunteers immediately stepped into action to assist Alabamians. Columbia Baptist Association DR volunteers began working in the Rehobeth, Malvern and Taylor areas doing chainsaw, skid-steer and cleanup work.
The work took about two days. Other teams did preliminary assessments in Geneva County and were ready to “assist as the opportunity is available,” according to Mark Wakefield, Disaster Relief and chaplaincy ministries strategist for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM).
For anyone interested in being trained in disaster relief, the SBOM will hold the following training in March and April:
- Chaplaincy training to help counsel storm victims April 6–8
- Disaster relief admin training March 11
- Child care and communications training March 25.
