McCalla church to host homeland security active shooter workshop

Active shooter incidents are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Knowing what to do can be the difference between life and death.

To help security personnel prepare, The Baptist Church at McAdory, McCalla, is hosting an Active Shooter Preparedness Workshop on Aug. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop leaders are from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security National Protection and Programs Directorate Office of Infrastructure Protection.

The one-day training is co-sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, InfraGard Birmingham Member Alliance, InfraGard Huntsville Member Alliance, Birmingham Citizens’ Academy Alumni Association, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Northern Alabama and The Alabama Baptist.

It is open to private sector businesses, facility security professionals, supervisory first responders, human resources managers, community response officials and DHS representatives.

Church and school officials from across the state, as well as any organization or business dealing with large groups of people in one place at one time, are especially encouraged to attend.

The workshop will describe how to incorporate key elements of successful incident management into planning efforts, such as:

• Developing communication and incident plans for employees,
• Building relationships with local first responders,
• Coordinating with first responders before, during and after an incident, and
• Integrating public affairs systems and policies into incident management.

Registration closes Aug. 12. To attend, participants must bring a government-issued ID.
