Current and former church members gathered Oct. 4 at Bethel Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove, to celebrate half a century of ministry. It was exactly 50 years to the day that a group of local families decided to open its homes to host Sunday School classes, nursery and worship services. Since that time, the body of believers and its facilities have continued to grow.
At the celebration, guest speaker David Potts, president of Judson College in Marion, cited Bethel Baptist’s strong history and a role call recognized the 123 charter members. The Bessemer Baptist Association church received plaques from state Rep. Pat Moore and Linda Rodgers of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission. As for the future, Pastor Rick Cato believes the church has “great growth potential.”
“I hope to see Bethel continue its long-standing leadership for Christ in our community,” Cato said. “I hope to see us continue to grow in missions and outreach in our community, state, the United States and abroad.”
