After his retirement from First, Decatur, in 1983, Stephenson served as interim pastor of 22 churches across north Alabama.

A native of Hartselle, Stephenson graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He later served as a trustee of Judson College in Marion and Samford.
