Goodwin, Dennis comment (0)

May 27, 2010

Dennis Goodwin, minister to adults 55 and older at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Birmingham, died May 16. He was 59.

Goodwin first came to Dawson Memorial Baptist in 1991 to serve as minister of education. In 1994, he left to begin a private business called Cobblestone Design in Birmingham but remained active at Dawson, serving as a Sunday School teacher. In 1999, he returned to the church’s staff taking on the role he would serve in until his death.

“[Dennis] was a very positive, upbeat person who was continually involved in doing ministry whether ... in the church or interacting with people in the community,” said Senior Pastor Gary Fenton. “He [had] a minister’s heart and a ministry lifestyle. We are certainly going to miss him.”

Goodwin previously served as minister of education at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Mobile; Capitol Heights Baptist Church, Montgomery; two churches in Texas; and one church in Missouri. He was also a summer associate at Cloverdale Baptist Church, Montgomery, in 1976.

A native of Cuba (Ala.), Goodwin graduated from Livingston University (now the University of West Alabama) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1972, he went to Seoul, South Korea, as a Foreign Mission Board (now the International Mission Board) journeyman and served as youth director at Seoul International Baptist Church until 1974.

Goodwin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Susan, and one son, Sam. (TAB)
