Gary Fenton is someone you should know. In addition to serving as pastor of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Birmingham, he is a member of the board of directors for The Alabama Baptist.
Q: Why did you begin serving on the board of directors of The Alabama Baptist?
A: I began serving because I saw it as an opportunity to make a contribution [in the] statewide Christian community. When Christian people are informed, they increase the likelihood they will make good choices in their personal lives and in their churches. Our state Baptist paper is an excellent tool in keeping the Alabama Baptist family informed.
Q: What does it demand of you?
A: Participating in committee and board meetings.
Q: What do you get out of serving on the board?
A: Serving on the board helps me to be aware of the immensity of God’s Kingdom and of the way God uses people in every area of the state [with a] variety of gifts to accomplish the work of the Kingdom.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in the future?
A: I am very impressed with the direction of our state Baptist paper and see my role as encourager to the editor and the many committed employees.
Q: What difference will serving on the board make for you in the future?
A: Both local church life and cooperative Baptist life is changing. The distribution of accurate information to congregations and to individual members will be more important than ever, and with changing technology the potential impact of The Alabama Baptist is greater than ever. These will be exciting times for our state Baptist paper, and I am glad to support the work of our visionary editor.
