J.R. Hawthorne, an active Alabama Baptist for 50 years, died Feb. 14 of an extended illness.
Beginning in 1953 Hawthorne served as pastor of Unity Baptist Church, Little River Baptist church and Demaris Baptist Church of Lookout Mountain Association; Sand Valley Baptist Church, Rock Run Baptist Church and Enon Grove Baptist Church of Cherokee Association; Black Creek Baptist Church of Etowah Association; Hopewell Baptist Church of Tennessee River Association; Four Mile Baptist church in Georgia; and Bethlehem Baptist Church of Sand Mountain Association.
Hawthorne also served as moderator of the Cherokee Association as well as Georgia’s Chattanooga Association. He was employed by the Alabama Highway Department from 1953 to 1969 while serving as bivocational pastor.
Hawthorne was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice. He is survived by wife Martina Eloise Street Smith, seven children, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
