Pleasant Grove’s Bethel receives Reeve grantcomment (0)
December 1, 2011
Bethel Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove, received a $5,540 Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. It was one of 74 grants totaling almost $500,000 awarded by the Reeve Foundation to nonprofit organizations nationwide that aid in providing more opportunities for individuals living with paralysis and their families and caregivers.
The Bessemer Baptist Association church used the funds to install a wheelchair lift that provides access to the sanctuary’s choir loft and stage area.
The immediate goal was to help longtime church member Scott Sartain, who has been singing in the choir for the last seven years. Sartain has used a wheelchair since he was injured in a water skiing accident in 1982.
The new lift allows him to get to his place in the choir loft more independently.
Bethel Baptist also hopes to serve others with this equipment, such as community members and school groups who use the sanctuary and any individuals not able to access the stage by way of the steps.
