FBC Jasper’s Culbreth ‘stands before Congress’

Dennis Culbreth, pastor of First Baptist Church, Jasper, in Walker Baptist Association, recently had a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”

He was invited to serve as a guest chaplain for the U.S. House of Representatives and opened the March 28 congressional day in prayer.

“To stand before Congress and lead a prayer was a great experience,” Culbreth told the Daily Mountain Eagle. “I was able to stand where the president stands when he gives the State of the Union address.”

Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville, invited Culbreth to serve as guest chaplain, according to the Eagle.

The practice of inviting guest chaplains to the House dates back to the beginnings of Congress, according to the Office of the Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives’ website.

Culbreth’s prayer — which asked the Lord to provide “guidance and wisdom as these men and women make decisions that affect the lives of every American here at home and across the world” — was broadcast live on C-SPAN.
