Montgomery’s Vaughn Forest Baptist quick to respond comment (0)

July 12, 2012

Montgomery Baptist Association’s disaster relief team is housed at Vaughn Forest Baptist Church, Montgomery.

According to Norm Bell, outreach minister at the church, the team consists of 65 people, six
of whom come from other churches.

“We’re basically a chain saw (and) cleanup crew,” Bell said. “Probably a third of our team are women.”

Russell Ray of Vaughn Forest Baptist coordinates the team’s efforts with the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, Bell said. “He really does a big job.”

The church has provided all the necessary equipment and allows it to be stored there. Some heavy machinery is also available for the group’s use.

When the team is called to respond to a disaster, it simply has to hook up its equipment trailer and go, Bell said.

In a major event, Vaughn Forest’s group is generally one of the first to be called upon to
deploy.

Ken May, director of missions for Montgomery Association, said the team is quick to respond locally and elsewhere.

Among the incidents to which the group has responded are Hurricanes Katrina, Ivan and Ike, a tornado in Enterprise and an ice storm in Missouri.

After the outbreak of tornadoes in April 2011, the team served in Eclectic, Tuscaloosa and Rainsville.

Vaughn Forest Baptist formed the team about eight years ago to assist in times of crisis.

Bell said people who are hurting are more open to the gospel of Jesus Christ when their needs are being met.

Through disaster relief, the group has seen individuals ask Jesus Christ into their heart. And neighbors who have seen compassion ministry done in Jesus’ name may have also accepted Him as Savior, Bell said.
