Sammy Brister, former Alabama Baptist pastor, died Sept. 10. He was 66.
Brister, a native of Brookhaven, Miss., attended Clarke Memorial College in Newton, Miss., Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Miss., and Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, Fla.
He served as pastor of Elkton Baptist Church, Elkton, Tenn., and also served as pastor of Alabama churches including Harvest Baptist Church from October 1985 to 1992 and First Baptist Church, Ardmore, from November 1992 to November 2007.
During his time at Harvest Baptist, Brister worked closely with the kindergarten committee to begin the church’s Child Development Center, which opened in 1986 with nine children and increased to about 75 in 2012.
Several new programs and ministries were started under Brister’s leadership at Elkton Baptist. In addition church membership grew and a new sanctuary and education building were opened December 2011.
Brister is survived by his wife, Shortie; three children; and three grandchildren.
