First Baptist Church, Sheffield, celebrated its 125th anniversary during a special service Aug. 19.
According to deacon and planning committee member John Adams, 435 people attended the Colbert-Lauderdale Baptist Association church’s anniversary service, which was triple the amount of worshippers usually in attendance.
Jim Warren, former director of missions (DOM) for Colbert-Lauderdale Association, delivered the message.
Jerry Armor, representative from the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented the church with a plaque recognizing the anniversary, and Eddy Garner, DOM for Colbert-Lauderdale Association, presented the church with a certificate.
According to Adams, a fellowship meal was held after the service. He noted many attendees reminisced throughout the day’s festivities. “A lot of people returned to Sheffield from out of state and various parts of Alabama [for the reunion],” he said, adding there was much hugging and old friends reuniting.
Pastor Chad Holder said the planning committee did a “great job” in coordinating the anniversary event.
He noted that the church is working hard to reach people in the immediate area as well as in surrounding areas. “We’re just trying to love God and love people,” he said. “For 125 years God has blessed us and we’re excited about the next 125 years.”
