West Weaver Baptist Church, Weaver, celebrated its homecoming and 50th anniversary during a 10 a.m. worship service July 14.
During the service, James Cohorn, the church’s former interim pastor, delivered the message, and southern gospel quartet Clearvision sang.
Wendell Dutton, representative of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented the Calhoun Baptist Association church with a plaque, and Thomas Bryant, a charter member of West Weaver Baptist, received the plaque. According to Pastor Donald Sills, Bryant attended the church’s first service, which was held in a skating rink 50 years ago.
Sills noted that approximately 150 people attended the anniversary service, and a lunch with further fellowship followed.
“We are really blessed to serve here,” Sills said. Looking to the future of the church, he added, “We want to proclaim a faithful gospel in a relevant way in West Weaver.”
