The University of Mobile (UMobile) will bring Lt. Col. Oliver North, USMC (Ret.) to Mobile for the ninth annual University of Mobile Leadership Banquet on March 27.
The gala event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center in downtown Mobile.
North is a combat-decorated U.S. Marine, a No. 1 best-selling author, founder of a small business, an inventor with three U.S. patents, a syndicated columnist and the host of “War Stories” on the Fox News Channel.
He has been awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for valor and two Purple Hearts for wounds in action. He has authored 13 books, all of them New York Times best sellers. His latest book is “American Heroes on the Homefront.”
Assigned to the National Security Council staff in the Reagan administration, North was the U.S. government’s counter-terrorism coordinator from 1983 to 1986. He was involved in planning the rescue of 804 medical students on the island of Grenada and played a major role in the capture of the terrorists who hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro.
After helping plan the U.S. raid on Muammar Gaddafi’s terror bases in Libya, North was targeted for assassination by Abu Nidal, the infamous terrorist killed in Baghdad in August 2002. President Ronald Reagan described North as “an American hero.”
The annual leadership banquet raises financial support for the UMobile Fund.
