Possible arson attack on Philadelphia Baptist

A fire engulfed parts of Philadelphia Baptist Church, Peterman, in Bethlehem Baptist Association on Feb. 25.

Chairman of the deacons and church treasurer Gene Ramer said there were four different origins of fire with the largest portion located in the fellowship hall.

Ramer said someone put in a 911 call at 6:24 a.m. and by 6:30 a.m., volunteer firefighters were heading to the church.

The main fire burned through the wall and up into the attic, busting a waterline, Ramer said. The water then flooded the room, which actually put most of the fire out before firefighters even arrived. Once they arrived they were able to extinguish the flames.

The fire appeared to be an act of arson, Ramer said. Someone kicked in the back door of the building and used literature, including Bibles and Sunday School curriculum, to create the main fire.

Church members met for prayer in the sanctuary Feb. 26 and will be able to utilize it for other gatherings in the future, Ramer said. “We’re just praising the Lord it wasn’t any worse and no one got hurt,” he said.
