Teen girls learn about missions at Completecomment (0)
April 10, 2014
The sent life is not the safe life. That was the message driven home to nearly 500 teen girls and their leaders who gathered recently at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, Montgomery, for Complete. Complete is an annual, two-day event for teen girls hosted by Alabama Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU). This year’s conference was March 9–10.
Author Erin Davis was the weekend’s keynote speaker. Davis urged girls to live their lives purposefully, understanding that they have been sent into the world for a reason. She challenged participants with the message that following God isn’t always easy. In fact, it’s sometimes unsafe. But that doesn’t change the fact that we are sent.
“The whole idea behind Complete is for teen girls to understand that their lives are completed only through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” said Erin Bishop, Alabama WMU Missions and Ministry Consultant for Students. “With ‘SENT’ being the theme at Complete this year, we wanted girls to embrace the idea that they have been sent into the world by God for a purpose and are equipped with unique gifts and talents to fulfill His specific plan for their lives. It may not be easy or safe, but it’s what we’re called to do.”
At the conference the girls heard from young female missionaries from around the world who are serving God in exciting, and often unsafe, places. The missionaries shared how God had been with them every step of the way in the good moments and frightening ones as well.
More than $1,250 was given in an offering to be used for Syrian refugees through Baptist Global Response.
Breakout conferences were offered on various topics including seeing the bigger picture, searching for truth, preparing for college and godly dating.
“Complete helped me understand that I need to get out of the boat and follow God rather than expecting Him to follow me,” said Makayla Turner, of Airport Boulevard Baptist Church, Mobile.
At the conclusion of Complete, more than 300 girls made a commitment to live a sent life.
Complete 2015 will be held at First Baptist Church, Pelham, March 13–14. For more information, visit www.alabamawmu.org/complete.
