Three announced nominees for SBC president comment (0)

June 5, 2014

Ronnie Floyd, pastor of Cross Church in northwest Arkansas, was the only announced nominee for president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) when the May 22 issue went to press. That issue had the official 2014 SBC preview, but two more candidates have announced since that time.

Jared Moore, pastor of New Salem Baptist Church, Hustonville, Ky., and Dennis Manpoong Kim, pastor of Global Mission Church of Greater Washington, Silver Spring, Md., also will be nominated.

Jared Moore

Moore will be nominated by Bennie Smith, a deacon at New Salem Baptist. Paul Sanchez, pastor of Willow

Baptist Church, Brooksville, Ky., was originally announced as the nominator but said he will not be making the

nomination.

Moore has led New Salem for the past four years, serving previously as a pastor and youth pastor in Tennessee.

Moore is the current second vice president of the SBC. He has served as a teaching assistant at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and an online adjunct professor at Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Ky.

Moore is the author of “10 Sacred Cows in Christianity that Need to Be Tipped” and “The Harry Potter Bible Study: Enjoying God Through the Final Four Harry Potter Movies.”

Moore holds a bachelor of arts from Trinity College of the Bible in Lynchburg, Va., a master of arts in religion from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary and a master of divinity from Southern Seminary. He is a doctor of philosophy student at Southern majoring in systematic theology.

Dennis Kim

Kim will be nominated by Texas pastor Dwight McKissic, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Arlington, Texas.

Kim, who has served as president of the Korean Council of Southern Baptist Churches in America, has served as pastor of Global Mission Church for 23 years.

Kim is a member of the Pastors’ Task Force on Evangelistic Impact and Declining Baptisms. He also served on the SBC Resolutions Committee in 2012 and 2013.

In addition to serving at churches in South Korea and the United States, Kim has taught courses at Southern, New Orleans and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminaries.

He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Korean institutions; a master of arts in theological studies with a concentration in pastoral counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, Mass.; a master of divinity from Southern Seminary; and a doctor of theology in pastoral psychology from Boston University in Boston, Mass.

Kim is the author of “Pulpit Counseling,” “Answer with the Bible!” and other books. He has translated more than 60 books from English to Korean.

Ronnie Floyd

Floyd will be nominated by Al Mohler, president of Southern Seminary.

In addition to chairing the 2009–10 Great Commission Resurgence Task Force, whose report included a call for international missions to receive 51 percent of all Cooperative Program gifts, Mohler noted that Floyd is a former chairman of the SBC Executive Committee and was a member of the SBC’s Program and Structure Task Force during the mid-1990s.

Floyd also has served as general editor for the updated and enhanced version of “Bible Studies for Life,” LifeWay’s Bible study curriculum series, released fall 2013.

He is the author of 10 books, including “Our Last Great Hope: Awakening the Great Commission” (2011) and “The Power of Prayer and Fasting” (2010).
