Indian Grave Baptist student athletes have heart for missions

It’s one thing to be a successful student athlete, another to be a successful academic. To be both while also in obedience to the cross is something entirely different. But Autauga County student athletes Jade Glass and Madison Price are examples of just that.

Believers in Christ since their formative elementary years, the girls are seniors graduating May 29 from Billingsley High School. Both also are student athletes, playing alongside one another on the varsity softball and basketball teams. And having maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, they will serve alongside each other as co-valedictorians of their graduating class.

“My faith is important to me because it has made me who I am,” Price said. “I accepted Christ at [age 6], and that has really helped me in my decision-making process. I’ve always known where to turn when I’m facing something that I don’t know how to deal with on my own. If I don’t know an answer, I know where to find it.”

Glass, who accepted Christ at 7, added, “God loves me so much that He sent His Son as a replacement for me because I am a sinner and always will be no matter how hard I try not to be. Even if it had just been me, I know that God would have still sent Jesus to take my place.

“Balancing my faith, school and sports hasn’t been easy, but it was necessary,” she noted. “School and sports are also very important to me, but I know where they belong in my priorities.”

Price agreed balancing everything has been difficult.

Balancing sports, missions, school

“I’ve been playing sports, preparing to go to Guatemala and trying to maintain a 4.0 GPA,” she said. “There have been times when I get frustrated and I’m not sure how I’m going to make it through the week, but I always turn to Matthew 6:34, which says, ‘Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.’ I know that without Christ and the support of my parents, I couldn’t have made it through high school and kept my sanity.”

Both girls are members of Indian Grave Baptist Church, Billingsley, and were moved to return to Guatemala for a second spring break missions trip following the testimony of a guest speaker at their church. While in Guatemala, the girls worked with children from infants to teenagers, and seven teens made professions of faith.

Varsity girls’ softball coach JT Lawrence said, “I try to get my girls to buy into the ‘we is greater than me’ philosophy. Jade and Madison represent character and morals that their teammates value and respect.”

Price plans to participate in a missions trip to Mississippi in June in which she’ll work to set up Vacation Bible School events and serve those there doing construction work. And while there are no definitive plans as of yet, Glass remains open to the prospect of future participation in missions.

Both will attend Troy University beginning this fall. While there Glass plans to study to be an athletic trainer, and Price plans to study sports management. They also plan to become actively involved in Baptist Campus Ministries.

Tim Scarbrough, pastor of Indian Grave Baptist, said, “They are both top-notch girls with a heart for the Lord and for others. They were excited when they went (to Guatemala), and they were excited when they came back. We’re blessed to have them as a part of our church. Everybody wants to have more Madisons and Jades.”
