Eric Gilchrest, assistant professor and head of the religious studies department at Judson College in Marion, has won a fellowship to present a paper at Georgetown College’s 2014 Summer Seminar of Young Scholars in the Baptist Academy. The seminar will be held July 15–19 in Oxford, England, at Regent’s Park College at the University of Oxford.
The seminar’s theme, “Answering Dystopia: Christian Hope and the Promised End,” aims to “explore the questions posed by dystopian visions, as well as answer such questions in a theologically responsive fashion.”
“A ‘dystopia’ is a society, community or world gone terribly wrong,” Gilchrest said.
Gilchrest’s paper, “The Prophetic and Apocalyptic Imagination: A Survey of Scripture’s Responses to Dystopia,” will focus on the theme of God’s presence and absence in the Bible and how this theme helps shed light on the problems dystopianism raises. Gilchrest has plans to bring his research into his classroom at Judson and is even teaching a summer course on the related issue of Jewish apocalypticism in the New Testament.
