At 90 years old, Woodie White is the oldest member of Coldwater Baptist Church, Oxford. Until a stroke in June blinded him, White was a faithful volunteer in several church ministries. When he regains his sight, White hopes to resume his position on the church greeting team, which he has been involved with for many years. White also hopes to return to the church security team and the Highways and Hedges Bible study and prayer ministry, through which he delivered taped Sunday School lessons and church services to homebound members.
Q: What led you to volunteer
A: I just love it. I guess it goes in the family. My mother and father did, and I just followed in their footsteps. We all love the Lord.
Q: What does the ministry require?
A: It’s not hard work. It’s getting in there and doing things you like to do. It comes naturally.
Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: I enjoy meeting people. I get a kick out of kids. They hug my neck and kiss me. We just have a ball. I enjoy having a good time, and I enjoy it better when I have a good time with the Lord.
Q: How do family members support you?
A: My wife goes to Sunday School and church with me every Sunday. My daughter and granddaughter go to the same church. My family supports me.
Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: As soon as I get my sight back — and the doctors say I will — I will pick up where I left off.
