To fulfill his Eagle Scout community service requirement, Tarrant Oliver McPherson, 18, decided to improve the appearance of the front of the building of M-POWER Ministries, a faith-based social services agency in Birmingham, to create a more comfortable place for patients of its medical clinic. Earlier this year, he led volunteers in landscaping around the entrance and placed a sign that would be visible from the street and outside seating for patients waiting on the clinic to open.
Q: How did you come to know the Lord?
A: I have always been a member of the church, gone to church and everything. When I first felt the calling to accept God into my life was at a camp in fifth grade. I was probably 12 at the time.
Q: How have you been involved with your church?
A: I’ve always been in the choir and youth group. I have always participated in Sunday School. I have gone on missions trips with my youth group.
Q: What have you gotten from those ministries?
A: Through my youth group and choir, it has been support. Through missions trips, just being able to help, you always get such a good feeling. You always take back the knowledge that you have a duty to fill in the world, that Christ is calling you to help others.
Q: What made you choose to work with M-POWER?
A: I felt comfortable with helping my church out. It is an organization affiliated with my church, and I knew about what they did.
Q: What did you learn from working with M-POWER that can be applied to your relationship with Christ?
A: We are so blessed living how we do, but there are so many people in the world who don’t have anywhere near the luxuries and comforts we do. It taught me how much we can do for them.
Q: What difference has being a Christian made in your life?
A: It has made me sit back and be patient. ... It has made me a lot more concerned about what is going on in the world and what I can do to help.
