Samford, TAB partner to offer online communication classes

Interested in polishing your speech and presentation skills? Need to learn how to appropriately edit your speaking points or discover how to better engage with your audience?

Then you may be interested in the second course of the online Ministry Communication Certificate offered through the Ministry Training Institute (MTI) of Samford University in Birmingham.

The Alabama Baptist (TAB) is partnering with Kevin Blackwell, executive director of MTI, to provide the certificate. The certificate consists of four courses in communication — written, verbal, digital/social and interpersonal.

TAB’s Jennifer Davis Rash teaches the written communication course, which just wrapped up for the 2016–2017 school year.

Bryan D. Gill, associate director of Samford’s office of professional studies, will teach the verbal communication course that begins Oct. 25. Gill has a bachelor of arts in communication from Auburn University, a master of divinity from Samford’s Beeson Divinity School and is working on his doctor of ministry degree from Gateway Seminary in Califorina. He also worked for TAB while studying at Beeson.

The final two courses will be taught by TAB’s Carrie Brown McWhorter, a 25-year veteran communicator.

The current course — verbal communication — is designed to introduce students to a variety of skills, situations and delivery methods that are useful in ministry settings. Students will learn how to write and deliver all types of speeches; improve their ability to speak in front of groups; share on podcasts and/or radio spots; and know how to appropriately gauge the length of their speech based on the situation, audience and content.
