Scott W. Bullard, Judson College’s senior vice president and dean of the college, has been named the eleventh president of Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina. He will assume his new responsibilities June 1.
Bullard joined Judson’s faculty as assistant professor of religious studies and as director of campus ministries in 2008. In the following years, he served in numerous academic and administrative roles on campus, including chair of the humanities division and head of the religious studies department, associate professor of religious studies, senior vice president and dean of the college, and, most recently, as interim president.
During his years at Judson, Bullard worked to enhance the academic offerings of the college, supervising the addition of three academic programs (the bachelor of science in equine science, the bachelor of social work, and the associate degree in nursing) and the growth of the college’s distance learning program. He also acted as institutional liaison to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and directed Judson’s successful reaffirmation of accreditation efforts in 2014. As senior vice president and dean of the college, Bullard supervised such capital improvements as the construction of the King Instructional Center at the Piper Equine Studies Complex and the refurbishment of the Adams-Armstrong Lecture Hall.
Bullard officially assumed the role of interim president in March 2018, following in the footsteps of his mentor, David Potts. As interim president, Bullard successfully concluded the $20.4 million “Blessed Light” capital campaign, negotiated a $1.4 million settlement from a major corporation and secured $479,000 in scholarship support.
“Judson College — her mission, the beauty of her campus, and most of all her people — has shaped my mind and will forever have part of my heart,” said Bullard. “I suspect that not a day will pass wherein the faces of the people who taught me to daily attempt to ‘live for service’ and ‘send forth blessed light’ will not come to mind. I believe that God has somehow used this season of my life and service at Judson to impact students’ lives here, but also to prepare me for service at Pfeiffer. I could not be more pleased that I have been called to work alongside the faculty and staff of Pfeiffer University to impact students.”
A North Carolina native, Bullard holds a master of divinity degree from Duke University and a bachelor of arts in religion and philosophy from Campbell University. After serving at Duke as a teaching assistant and working as a development officer for the non-profit entity Stop Hunger Now, Bullard and his family moved to Texas, where he earned a Ph.D. in Theology at Baylor University and served as adjunct professor at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
“I became acquainted with Dr. Bullard a number of years ago,” said W. Mark Tew, the recently appointed 23rd president at Judson College. “New to his role at that time, Scott reached out to discuss the preparation of the college’s accreditation report, an initiative that, in my mind, demonstrated wisdom and maturity as an administrator. In his duties at Judson, including as Interim President, Bullard represented the College well to boards, donors, and constituents. It would have been a great honor to work collaboratively with Dr. Bullard here at Judson, but I am confident he will bring the same dedication, insight, and innovation to his new role as President of Pfeiffer.”
Stacey Gaines Parham will serve the college as interim academic dean upon Bullard’s departure. Parham joined the Judson faculty in 2010 and has rendered exemplary service to the college as assistant professor of English, associate professor of English, head of the English department, chair of the humanities and fine arts division, and, most recently, associate dean of the college for curriculum and instruction.
