Religious expression in La. schools limited

A settlement filed Jan. 23 will strictly limit the religious expression of Bossier Parish, Louisiana, public school employees.

A complaint filed in 2018 cited religious activities endorsed by school officials, including holding school events in churches, allowing student-led prayers at school events and promoting student participation in Christian organizations.

The complaint also cited religious content in choir performances and teachers who expressed religious beliefs in class or at sporting events.

The new policy limits school officials in several ways, including participating or leading prayers at school events. Schools are also required to use their best efforts to secure secular venues for large school events. (BP)
