Saraland native Sayasane crowned Miss University of Mobile 2017

Chelsey Sayasane, a communication major from Saraland, was crowned Miss University of Mobile (UM) 2017 at the pageant’s 52nd anniversary Feb. 4 at the Saraland High School Performing Arts Center.

For the next year, Sayasane will represent UM at various events, including the Miss Alabama pageant in June at Samford University in Birmingham. Participation in this pageant is the next stage of the Miss America pageants across the United States.

“Getting to represent University of Mobile at Miss Alabama is my dream come true,” Sayasane said. “I’m in shock but I’m so thankful for this opportunity the Lord has given me.”

‘Coats of Many Colors’

Sayasane also looks forward to expanding her platform, “Coats of Many Colors.” Through this project Sayasane collects coats at Saraland High School, Bridgeway Academy and Merle Norman in Saraland. Each of these coats is distributed directly to the homeless, particularly homeless men, in Mobile. So far she has collected and distributed more than 800 coats.

“My hope is to establish a large group of volunteers who will help with the collection and distribution process but it’s much more than giving away free coats,” she said. “I want those who are homeless to know they are not forgotten, that we see them in their struggle. This is about building relationships in our community.”

Prior to being crowned by Miss UM 2016 Miranda Freeman, Sayasane won the People’s Choice award in addition to the swimsuit portion. For her talent she performed Michael Bublé’s hit rendition of “Feeling Good.”

Former winners

Several former Miss UMs were in attendance, including Miss UM 2007 Jaye Herrod Durkin, who served as a judge, and Miss UM 2014 Brooke Sanders. Miss UM 2015 Emily Danforth attended the event and, like Miss UM 2016, gave a special performance during the pageant.

First runner-up was Erica Burleson, a piano performance major from Satsuma. Burleson also was the winner in the talent portion, showcasing Antonio Vivaldi’s “Spring, I. Allegro” in a violin solo.

Second runner-up was Whitney Myers, a business administration, marketing and worship leadership major from Mobile. Myers also was selected Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. (UM)
