Shades Mountain Pastor Danny Wood to be SBC Pastors Conference nominee

Birmingham’s own Danny Wood will be nominated for president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Pastors Conference for 2019, according to an announcement by Texas Pastor Gregg Matte.

“With the Pastors’ Conference and Southern Baptist Convention being in Birmingham for 2019, he is the right choice to lead us in his hometown,” said Matte, a former Pastors’ Conference president and current pastor of First Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. “Most importantly, Dr. Wood understands the joys and challenges we face as pastors and will plan a conference that inspires our hearts with great theology and application.”

Wood has served as pastor of Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Vestavia Hills, for more than 20 years.

Current first vice chairman of the North American Mission Board trustees, Wood has served on church staffs in Texas, Louisiana and Alabama. Prior to entering ministry, he had eight years of business experience with AT&T Information Systems and South Central Bell in Alabama.

Matte called Wood “a man worthy of following, an example in rightly dividing the Word of truth along with shepherding the flock well in the daily tasks of the local church.”

At the 2017 annual meeting of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, Shades Mountain Baptist was recognized for being the state’s top giver of undesignated receipts ($799,200) through the Cooperative Program.

Shades Mountain has conducted ministry in all 50 states, 80 countries around the world, supported more than 30 church plants in the United States and around the world and has seen 190 members go into full-time missions work.

Wood and his wife, Janice, have one daughter. (BP, TAB)
