Tennessee joins other states with adoption bill

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced Jan. 14 his plans to sign into law a measure that would assure continued taxpayer funding of faith-based foster care and adoption agencies even if they exclude LGBT families and others based on religious beliefs.

Tennessee joins several other states, including Alabama, in supporting similar bills. Supporters argue such measures are needed to protect against potential lawsuits hostile to the religious beliefs of faith-based groups.

A proposed rule by the Trump administration would offer the same protections nationwide, rescinding an Obama-era rule that withheld federal funds from agencies whose policies restricted families based on sexual orientation and gender identity. (AP, TAB)
