Thieves steal catalytic converters in Cullman

A rash of catalytic converter thefts off church vans and buses caused the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office to issue a warning to churches to keep an eye on their vehicles.

About a half dozen cases have been reported, according to Sheriff Matt Gentry, who said his department will closely patrol church neighborhoods. However, he advised that churches might want to take preventive action, perhaps by moving the church van or bus to a member’s home.

Catalytic converters, part of a vehicle’s exhaust system, are popular targets for thieves who are looking to sell the metals in the devices to scrap yards. Buses, vans and trucks are popular targets as the converters are easy to reach from under the vehicle. (TAB)
